been struggling. right now, romney is still down by a point there. but it is a competitive situation. the fact is, all three of these states have nobody, really, in the lead. they are pure toss ups. the question is whether this is just a bounce that will fade or is it something that mitt romney can build upon and carry through the remaining month. >> now, someone from real clear politics said maybe the jobless numbers today could benefit president obama a little bit but give us a sense of how long these things last, how long the bounce lasts and what we should look for the next week? >>guest: well, bounces last these days less than a week so if it is just a bounce it will fade. they last only until there is a better story. the jobs numbers today give president obama something new to talk about, a more positive direction. most voters are concept california of good economic news , whether it is a republican or democratic president until it is repeated. so, if the next jobs report is good or the next series of economic reports are better, that the help president obama. if this towns out

down to one thing, if governor romney explains that his plan to get jobs going is no different than my race in 2010. all i talked about what i would do to turn the economy around. it worked. unemployment has dropped faster than any other state. down 2.3 percent. last month, we were second to texas in job creation. my competition is governor perry. if he talks jobs, governor romney, he will do well. that is the biggest issue in our country. clearly, it is an issue in florida. we have done well but we still have people unemployed. a lot better than what we were but we still have a lot of work. >>neil: you reminded me at the convention and other times we have chatted, polls are fleeting and fickle. but it is interesting to me that in some of the states, swing states, the president made inroads and it could change over night. if -- in ohio, in michigan, in wisconsin, all the republican governors, all practicing turn arounds, all utilizing policies that would appear to be anathema to president obama but now the benefit seems to go to...president obama. >>guest: it is incumbent upon gover

, calm down. quit getting your beak out of joint. mitt romney wants to close the spigot on your joint. b.b., you don't mind me calling you b.b., right? just because he wants to stop paying for you, doesn't mean he doesn't still love you. we all love you. are you listening to me? big bird, look at me. you're not the problem, my feathered friend. taxpayer dollars that feathered your cozy washington nest are. you don't need them. in a free market, you'll thrive more without them. that's the thing about iconic symbols, they don't need to be propped up. you, big bird, are an icon. you my garishly colored feathered friend are a star. what they pull on you is nothing short of a cruel joke. they are saying you're cheap to keep. that the millions we spend on you on public broadcasting is more than bird feed. you know what i mean. i don't buy it. by that argument we'd never cut anything ever. taxpayer funding for public television is chump change. why bother? money on solar company that is a flicker compared to billions of taxpayer money wasted each and every year. why try? all true. you don't

been waiting for romney to come hitting the growth agenda and low rate flat tax-and-spending reductions and the other ways of bringing the national debt down. i have not seen it. the 4 percent tax rate came out i thought he said he was proud of paying 14 percent and everyone else should pay 14 percent. i shouldn't be the only one paying 14 percent. he did not do it that way. i hope this time he does. if he does the growth message like ronald reagan, he could win the election but it has to be truly credible and not appear as though he is apologetic. >>neil: what i learned on fox business network talking to these two retired senators, they recognize how surprisingly easy it is just to talk about a democrat in the indicate of sam nunn, slowing down the growth of entitlements and from senator bennett, a republican, closing loop hes and credits that allow some not to pay taxes at all. ronald reagan would tell you, it is not a tax hike. however, we get so dog mattic and fixed in our positions we are piling up more to the debt because of this. >>guest: exactly. sam nunt did not ment

cavuto and this is what a roaring romney sounded like. >> trickle down government is where the president will raise taxes on small business which kills jobs. i want to keep taxes down on small business so we can create jobs. this is about good jobs for the american people. >>neil: he swings, slams, scores, way too early to say if the swing states swinging back to the challenger but after last night, the critics say they probably stopped swinging away. larry said the race ain't over but he also is saying for the challenger it is an uphill fight. what do you make of last night and how this changes the dynamics? >> everyone, obviously, just about everyone, from right to left, says that romney won the debate. i gave you a full "a" and i give the president a "c" minus. there was a giant difference between their performance. everyone who was fair was impressed with how romney handled that from going to end. obama was stunned by how well romney was performing. he seemed almost to take a step back and tune out. >>neil: do you think he came in to it is on the clock, the president, to yo

this is mitt romney and he does not have the flare and the elegance of one president obama. ahead of things they keep expectations down. after things, they raise the bar. to the debt and how they sell this out far, the republican congressman from the fine state of florida. we are told, congressman, this debt will be a big issue. although there is great risk to that, a lot of folks say that it makes people's eyes glaze over. there is a good strategy, actually, to that. what tour make of that? >>guest: afternoon, neil. it has to be a huge issue. this debt we have is not only threatening our economic security but it is threatening our national security. when you understand that here in less than four years we have gone from $10.6 trillion in debt to over $16 trillion in debt, the debt per person in the united states america has gone from $34,000 to close to $51 $51,000. we need to look at things such as the gasoline prices which on inauguration day for president obama was $1.84. now we are close to $4. think of the tens of thousands that have been spent for families to keep up with the

up on the middle class. obviously governor romney says that is not the case but this downed frommen middle class would be even more down trodden. how should, if that comes up, the governor spend to that tonight? >>guest: there are two ways. he is proposing a 20 percent cut in the marginal rates for everyone. he is also proposing getting rid of capital gains if middle class l is no preliminary to raise taxes on the middle class. that is made up. it is not true. what governor romney needs to do in the campaign, i think, is to establish there are two distinct visions here. one vision is, you don't know what will happen in the next four years with the economic policy or with international policy. there are two ways to look at things: one is how the president looks at it. every solution is government, government, government. that is you who he will approach problems including tax and the middle class. governor romney will approach problems as someone who wants to support the private sector, would believes in economic and individual freedom, wants to release the american spirit and releas
